3 University Application Secrets Your Future Self Will Thank You For

University applications are months away. Some of the decisions that make them easier are not.

If you are in Grade 11 or 12, university application season can feel like something Future You will deal with.

Future You would probably appreciate a little help.

For students planning to start university in fall 2027, the process is already getting underway. UBC applications open in early October 2026, with the main application deadline on January 15, 2027. Ontario's application cycle is also underway, with January 15 as an important deadline for many current Ontario high school students.

But submitting an application is only one part of the process.

Here are three things worth knowing early.

1. The program matters more than the university name

When students review notes or read a textbook, they’re often recognizing information they’ve already seen.

But when they teach someone else, something different happens:

  • they organize their thoughts

  • they explain ideas in their own words

  • they connect steps and concepts

  • they notice what makes sense — and what needs more clarity

This shift from passive to active learning helps reinforce understanding, and makes information stick much more effectively.

2. The application deadline may not be your first important deadline

This one is easy to miss.

Students often search for one date: When is my university application due?

But scholarships, supplementary applications, portfolios, interviews and other requirements can create earlier or separate deadlines.

For example, UBC's general application deadline for September 2027 admission is January 15, 2027. However, Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to be considered for several major UBC entrance awards need to apply by December 1, 2026.

Ontario students applying through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre also have January 15, 2027 as the application deadline for Group A applicants, while individual universities and programs may have additional requirements and dates.

The easiest solution is surprisingly low tech.

Make a simple spreadsheet.

For every program you are considering, record:

Application deadline | Prerequisites | Supplementary requirements | Scholarship dates | Other important dates

Ten minutes of organization now can prevent a lot of frantic searching later.

3. You do not need a perfect plan. You need better questions.

“What do you want to do for the rest of your life?”

That is a very large question to ask someone who may still need permission to leave class.

University research becomes more manageable when you make the questions smaller.

Instead of trying to choose your entire future, ask:

Which subjects do I actually enjoy?

Which subjects am I strongest in?

Do I prefer writing, calculating, researching, designing, experimenting, building, or working with people?

What would I genuinely like to learn more about for the next few years?

Then start looking at programs rather than job titles.

You may discover an area of study you had never considered. You may also discover that two programs with similar names offer very different courses and experiences.

The objective is not to have your entire career mapped out by Grade 12.

It is to make your next decision with better information.

A little preparation now goes a long way

University application season does not have to begin with a colour coded spreadsheet, a five year plan, and your entire future figured out.

Start smaller.

Check three programs. Look at their prerequisites. Save the important dates. Notice where your current courses and interests are taking you.

For Grade 12 students, doing that now can make the next few months much easier.

For Grade 11 students, you have something even more valuable: time to adjust.
