Our Services

Our Story

Large Tutoring started in 2017 when our Founder and Chief-Executive-Officer, Clinton Large, graduated from Chemical & Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia and was asked to tutor a friend’s son in IB Physics 11. That was the moment when Clinton discovered that he loved teaching – and that he was good at it! With that student’s success, more of Clinton’s friends asked him for help in various courses, from AP Calculus 12 to Science 10, eventually leading to a full tutoring corporation.

When the demand for this kind of tutoring service grew, Clinton took on other like-minded people who were enthusiastic about learning, excellent communicators, and who had the same teaching philosophy. Now, just over five years since his first student, Clinton works as a tutor full-time and has 20 other tutors with him. Large Tutoring helps over 150 students a week, ensuring every student knows “why” their solutions work and that they all achieve their academic goals.

Philosophy

We are the first to admit that the list of things to learn is never ending. And the more we learn about something, the more we seem to find that it’s actually a lot more complex than when we first thought.

At Large Tutoring, we help our students navigate these growing complexities, but more importantly, we ensure that they can always find their way back to the basics. As they learn to tackle new and more challenging problems, we ensure that they know exactly where the solutions are coming from. We don’t ask “what did we do?” but “why did we do it?” By understanding the “why”, we ensure that the next time around, and then the next, students will be able to apply their knowledge to solve the problem, independently.

Clinton Large, Owner

Hi everyone! My name is Clinton and I am the founder of Large Tutoring with over 7 years of teaching experience. I specialize in Math and Science-based courses, all levels, and my teaching philosophy is to ensure you understand “why” you made each choice in solving a problem and not just memorizing it. That way in new but similar circumstances, you are able to excel. I have a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree from the University of British Columbia in Chemical & Biological Engineering, I’ve worked across Canada and in Europe in biomedical and healthcare settings, and I simply love teaching! When I’m not teaching, you can find me training for a triathlon, playing the trumpet, or singing to the latest Taylor Swift song.

Erika Hunter

Hello everyone, I’m Erika! I am an MA student in English literature at the University of Toronto, and I have been tutoring English and French since I was in high school, where I was an International Baccalaureate and French Immersion student. My approach to teaching is to encourage students to think and learn as independently as possible, while of course providing guidance and support wherever needed. I love when students ask lots of questions, and I prioritize creating a safe and comfortable learning environment. When I’m not teaching or in class, I am usually reading, spending time outside, or trying to teach myself how to crochet.

Robyn Peers

Hello! I'm Robyn and I'm a PhD student in English Rhetoric at the University of British Columbia. I've been teaching English in some form for over 8 years now, and am deeply passionate about helping students reframe feedback and learn to capitalize on their unique strengths. I emphasize critique as an act of care and writing as a relationship between writers and our readers, rather than a test of individual intelligence or value. I've also assisted students with courses in Business Communication, Media Anthropology, and Economics, and am generally happy to assist with any needs students have in terms of effectively and confidently communicating their ideas. When I'm not working, I'm most often found watching old horror movies, reading books (unsurprisingly), or losing at board games!

Hello everyone! My name is Arsh, and I am a recent UBC graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology. My academic journey has taken me from studying the fascinating world of microbes to exploring the human side of science through research on psychosocial aspects of cancer care. I’ve had the privilege of working in both lab and research settings, where curiosity, patience, and critical thinking were key - values I bring into my tutoring. I know that every student learns in their own way, and I see my role as finding the approach that clicks for you.

Paddy Chaturvedi

My name's Paddy and I am a graduate of University of Victoria with a BSc in computer science and psychology. I have a background in career/ academic advising and employment counseling. I also have experience tutoring math and computer science and am comfortable with tutoring sciences and psychology as well. My teaching approach begins with creating a safe, supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring challenges. My goal is to build confidence and strengthen problem-solving skills so you feel capable and ready to tackle challenges on your own.

Deena El-Harazy

Michaela Deane

Hello! I’m Michaela, an executive function coach and counselling intern completing my Master of Counselling degree. As a counsellor, a phrase I often hear from neurodivergent clients is, “I wish I knew this when I was younger.” My goal is to make that knowledge accessible to kids and teens now. I help young people to better understand their neurodivergence and develop tools to succeed in a world built for neurotypical brains. My approach is all about teaching them strategies that work with their brains, not against them. I believe that when they understand why they think and act the way they do, it builds self-compassion and opens the door to long-term growth. Outside of coaching, I love creative writing and reading about psychology!

Hrishikesh Patel

Hello!! I'm Hrishi, a graduate student in Physics at UBC and a STEM tutor at Large Tutoring Inc! I completed my BSc in Honours Physics and Mathematics from UBC (2023) and have also taught numerous courses (as a teaching assistant) for the past 4 years at the university level. These days, I spend most of my time talking to people about physics/math, either with my peers in a research setting or with students during teaching/tutoring and I love the satisfaction I get in engaging in the process of learning. That said, I'm always learning ways to learn better and teach better and I really hope to make STEM less intimidating for students! Whenever I am not doing any of the above, you can find me hiking, running or reading (generally not all at the same time!)

Nicky Priebe

Hi! I'm Nicky, and I'm a math educator who recently graduated UBC with my MSc. I've taught and tutored math and physics at every level from grade 6-12, all the way up through college and university. As a teacher, my first goal is to make the subject friendlier, more creative, and more interesting so that you can truly understand math beyond just memorizing formulas. We can work together to find a teaching style that empowers you to explain the "why", and solve problems you haven't seen before. I value patience, flexibility, and empathy for your goals, whether you want support with a course you're struggling with now, or to explore some of the beauty math has to offer beyond the BC curriculum. I'm so excited to meet you!

Mark Choi

Hi! My name is Mark (Kang), and I am a Master's student in Physics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). I completed my BSc in Honours Physics and Mathematics at UBC in 2023 and have over two years of experience as a teaching assistant for several first-year physics courses. When I teach, I prefer to engage with students through interaction rather than delivering long lectures. I often ask questions and listen carefully to their responses and understanding, guiding them based on their needs. This approach helps students develop the skills and confidence to solve problems independently. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time in nature or working out at the gym. I'm looking forward to meeting you all!
